Nicole
I received a kidney from a deceased donor on June 8th, 1998.
I've had chronic kidney disease my whole life. I was born at 27 weeks weighing 1lb 5oz. I don't do things like any normal 24 year old. I don't party or go out with friends. Instead I'm either home watching Netflix, listening to music, or crocheting. I have several medications to take, monthly lab-work, and several doctor appointments.
When I was 8 or 9 years old my pediatric Nephrologist, Dr. Neiburger, suggested I go to a camp for chronically ill children. I never thought I'd meet anyone just like me, but I've made some amazing friends I call family over the 8 years I went to Camp Boggy Creek.
Getting a kidney transplant has been a blessing. I love the beach and going swimming. I can spend more time with my family instead of on a machine 3 times a week.
I really want people to understand that kidney transplant is NOT a cure. Transplants only last on average 10-15yrs.
Even though I have a transplant, it doesn't defy who I am. I'm a sweet, caring, loving human being.
